Bengals were officially accepted by The International Cat Association (TICA) as a registered breed in 1986 and gained championship status in 1991. Despite the Bengal's wild ancestry, they have been selectively bred to be confident, curious, intelligent, and devoted companions. Bengals are considered a generally healthy breed, but there are a few health concerns to be aware of before purchasing a Bengal cat.
